Conditions We Treat
Rivkin Addiction Medicine provides evidence-based treatment for a wide range of substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and withdrawal management — serving patients across Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Monroe counties and all Downriver communities, with telemedicine available for anyone in Michigan. Every care plan is individualized to the patient.
Opioid Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable medical condition. Dr. Rivkin offers the full spectrum of FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment — including buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone), Sublocade, naltrexone, and Vivitrol — combined with counseling and compassionate ongoing care tailored to your goals.
Alcohol Use Disorder is one of the most common — and most treatable — forms of addiction. Dr. Rivkin provides medically supervised care for all stages, from safe withdrawal management through long-term relapse prevention.
Pharmacotherapy options include naltrexone (oral and injectable Vivitrol) and acamprosate, both proven to reduce cravings and support sustained abstinence. Treatment is always individualized to your goals and circumstances.
Withdrawal from certain substances can be uncomfortable and, in some cases, medically serious. Dr. Rivkin provides safe, closely monitored withdrawal management to minimize risk, reduce discomfort, and prepare patients for the next stage of recovery.
We specialize in the management of withdrawal from the following substances:
Nicotine dependence is a powerful addiction with serious health consequences, and quitting is one of the most impactful things a person can do for their long-term health. Dr. Rivkin creates personalized cessation plans that significantly increase the likelihood of quitting for good.
Stimulant use disorder, including dependence on cocaine and methamphetamine, can be effectively treated through a combination of behavioral therapy and careful medical management of withdrawal symptoms, mood disturbances, and cravings. Dr. Rivkin works closely with each patient to build a sustainable, individualized recovery plan.
While often minimized, cannabis use disorder is a real and clinically significant condition that can impact daily functioning, relationships, and mental health. Dr. Rivkin provides assessment and treatment using motivational interviewing and evidence-based strategies, including management of cannabis withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and irritability.
Behavioral addictions — including gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder, and other compulsive behaviors — share many of the same neurological pathways as substance use disorders. Dr. Rivkin applies addiction medicine principles to help patients regain control and build healthier behavioral patterns.
Addiction and mental health conditions frequently co-occur — anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma are common companions to substance use. Dr. Rivkin takes an integrated approach, addressing both the addiction and underlying mental health factors as part of a unified, whole-person care plan.
Dr. Rivkin is a registered Michigan Health Professional Recovery Program (HPRP) evaluator, conducting confidential substance use evaluations for licensed health professionals — physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and others — referred to or voluntarily entering the program.

Honest answers to what we hear most before a first appointment.
Yes. Your care is fully protected under HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, which provides strict confidentiality protections for substance use disorder records. Before we speak with anyone about your care, we ask you to complete and sign a Release of Information form. Nothing is shared without your explicit, written authorization.
In most cases, no referral is needed — you can contact us directly. Some insurance plans may require prior authorization, but we'll help you navigate this and verify your coverage before your first visit. If a referral is needed and you consent, we'll reach out to your primary care provider on your behalf.
Yes — and we encourage it. Telemedicine is available for new patients and follow-up visits from anywhere in Michigan. Video visits are secure, private, and covered by most insurance plans. Most patients will need at least one in-person visit, particularly when controlled substances are being prescribed for maintenance treatment.
That's okay — and it's honest. Dr. Rivkin practices a harm reduction approach. You don't need to be ready to completely abstain to benefit from care. Showing up is enough to start.
