What to Expect at Your First Visit

If you are thinking about coming in for the first time, I want you to know something up front. You do not have to have it all figured out before you walk through the door. Showing up is the hardest part, and if you are reading this, you are already doing it.

Here is what a first appointment with me actually looks like.

We spend a good amount of time just talking. I like to get a full picture of your health and your story, so I will ask about a lot of things โ€” not only substances. I try to do this gently. There is no lecture and no judgment. It is a conversation, not an interrogation, and you can share as much or as little as you feel ready to.

Showing up is the hardest part, and if you are reading this, you are already doing it.

You are welcome to come by yourself, and you are just as welcome to bring a partner, a family member, or a friend. Some people feel steadier with a support person in the room, and some would rather come alone. Both are completely fine.

I also want to be clear about something that stops a lot of people from reaching out. I do not require you to attend meetings or finish a program before I will help you. If meetings are part of what works for you, that is wonderful. If they are not your thing, we will still work together. I may bring up different kinds of support at your visits, because I have seen them help people, but the choice is always yours and it will never be a condition of your care.

My job is to help you medically, and I take that seriously. I also see my role as something a little bigger. I am another person in your corner โ€” another support who wants to see you get well and stay well. Recovery is easier when you are not doing it alone, and I am glad to be part of that for you.

When you are ready, come in. We will take it one step at a time.

No Requirements. No Judgment.

You do not need to have attended a program, hit a rock bottom, or have all the answers before you come in. If you are ready to talk, so am I.

You Do Not Have to Do This Alone

Reach out whenever you feel ready. There is no judgment here โ€” just care.
